This spell requires the body of a dead familiar and a 1.000 gp black pearl, both of which are consumed by the casting. Once cast, the necromancer creates an obedient dark familiar. Further castings create additional familiars who follow the commands of their creator. The only benefit the necromancer gains from additional familiars is the increase of her effective HD for purposes of rebuking or commanding undead.
